Nana’s Baked Beans
Nana would start early in the morning to have these just right for when it was supper time.
She worked with her everyday items to make the best baked beans ever.
Nana’s Best Baked Beans
Ingredients:
1 pound dried navy beans
1 salt pork
2 bay leaves
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup molasses
2 tbsp dark brown sugar
1 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
Salt and pepper to taste
6 oz sliced bacon
Directions:
Rinse dry beans and check for stones. Place beans in a large pot, cover with water 2 inches and let soak over night, or bring to a boil and allow to sit, with the heat off, for an hour.
Drain and rinse beans, then put in a saucepan. Cover beans with fresh water and cook over medium heat. Add all remaining ingredients, except bacon. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 30 minutes, or until beans are tender.
Transfer the beans and broth to a 2 quart oven safe dish. Lay bacon slices across top of beans. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 325 degrees for 1 hour.
Serve and sit back and enjoy the compliments.
